When Sam Maquilon joined some of the members from his church in their outreach program, he was impressed by how this ministry could reach people so directly in a public space you wouldn’t normally see Christian literature being distributed. But with the permission of the managers, it is legal to distribute Christian literature at a public mall.
The San Jose Central Church has been able to take this opportunity and distribute literature to the many people who visit the mall. This gives them the ability to witness face-to-face to people who would not normally hear about God and the Seventh-day Adventist Church, especially while they are shopping for clothes or wandering with their friends.
This ministry has led to many inspiring interactions as well. Sam Maquilon said that once when they were passing out GLOW tracts at the mall, he randomly chose a tract and handed it to a couple who were interested. Maquilon said, “Then he stopped and he looked at it. And then he looked at me. And then they approached me and the woman said, ‘What … what is the mark of the beast? What is that?’”
The couple had recently been researching this subject and were sorting through many different theories about the mark of the beast. But Maquilon was able to explain the prophetic approach that the Adventist Church uses for the mark of the beast and teach them about the many different prophecies in the Bible. The husband said, “Sam, this is amazing! My wife and I have been praying for a couple of weeks asking God, What is the mark of the beast? And we just so happened to come to the mall. We don't shop at the mall. We had to come here to get something, and we just so happened to come by.”
When Maquilon first discovered this ministry through friends, he saw the potential it had. This drew him in and has allowed him to reach people by distributing GLOW tracts, Bible studies, Amazing Facts handouts, Sabbath school lessons, and many other types of Adventist literature. “I saw the potential here,” he explained. “As people are walking, we can give them a tract and we can talk to them.” This simple method can connect you with a person and help bring people to your church.
